Exploring Dubai’s Roots: A Journey Through the Heritage House

The Heritage House in Dubai offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the UAE’s past. Built in 1890 by Mr. Matar Saeed bin Mazina, this historical house is a testament to local architecture and culture. Nestled in one of Dubai’s oldest urban areas, the Heritage House allows visitors to explore how people in the region lived, worked, and interacted with their environment, especially in the harsh desert conditions.

A Window into Traditional Emirati Life

Visitors to the Heritage House can experience a comprehensive depiction of Emirati living from centuries ago. The house showcases various traditional household items, including pottery, copper, wood, and glass utensils. The collection also features furniture, clothing, jewellery, cosmetics, and even toys, reflecting the life and craftsmanship of that time. These items, some of which were locally made and others imported from India and the East African coast, paint a vivid picture of the daily lives of Emirati families.

Architectural Beauty and Function

The Heritage House is a two-story structure built from coral, stone, plaster, teakwood, chantal wood, and palm tree fronds and trunks. The design of the house is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, incorporating elements such as air towers (Barajeel), open courtyards, and intricate room layouts. Visitors will see how the house was designed to suit the hot desert climate, ensuring both comfort and privacy for its inhabitants while adhering to religious and social traditions.

Explore the Unique Spaces of the House

The philosophy behind the Heritage House’s design focuses on a balance of closed, semi-open, and open spaces, allowing for airflow and ventilation to beat the harsh heat. Its rooms, diwans (grand halls), and courtyards are arranged to provide comfort and privacy, demonstrating the ingenuity of local architectural design.
