Abu Dhabi is firmly positioning itself at the forefront of global cycling with the development of Velodrome Abu Dhabi, a world-class indoor cycling venue located on Hudayriyat Island. Scheduled to open in 2025, this state-of-the-art arena will host elite track events and champion the emirate’s ambition to become a premier global cycling hub.
A Spectacular Architectural and Sporting Landmark
Velodrome Abu Dhabi will be a 3,500-seat indoor cycling arena, boasting the region’s first UCI Category 1 indoor track suitable for international championships. The venue covers a 12,000 square metre footprint and features a captivating rooftop cycling track linked to the ground via a 600-metre spiralling ramp. This design delivers panoramic 360-degree views of Hudayriyat Island and the Abu Dhabi skyline, blending elite sport with architectural spectacle.
Pedalling Towards Progress: Abu Dhabi’s Cycling Revolution
In November 2021, Abu Dhabi was awarded the prestigious UCI Bike City designation, making it the first city in Asia to earn the honour. This award recognised the city’s comprehensive efforts in cycling infrastructure and community promotion. Velodrome Abu Dhabi is a cornerstone of this vision, complementing the city’s ambition to expand its cycling network from 300km to over 1,000km, including the flagship 109km Abu Dhabi Loop. The government-baked Bike Abu Dhabi initiative further supports this transformation through integrated plans in mobility, health, leisure, and sport, reinforcing cycling as a sustainable and inclusive lifestyle choice.
Hudayriyat: Abu Dhabi’s Cycling Epicentre
Hudayriyat Island already serves as a vibrant cycling destination, with 28km of waterside track and access to an expanding network. The island is also home to other facilities like BMX Tracks, recreational trails, and F1 training sessions at Yas Marina Circuit, a popular route open to cyclists twice weekly. As part of a broader masterplan, the velodrome is integrated with Surf Abu Dhabi and the urban park development, forming a sports and leisure precinct that elevates the island to a holistic cycling and outdoor recreation hub.
